Sequel, A TwentyFourteen child theme

Sequel – A Twenty Fourteen Child theme

The saga continues with the Sequel :)

Sequel is a child theme for the Twenty Fourteen default theme and aims to build on and expand upon the parent theme.

Main features of the theme are…

  1. The ability to switch the home blog feed to the grid format – see demo here: The Sequel
  2. Set the Featured section to full width above content and both sidebars.
  3. Author bio page to mimic the Contributors page
  4. Upload a site logo

And when combined with the Fourteen Extended & Styles: TwentyFourteen plugins, Sequel becomes a power house with ample customization to build an awesome looking sites.

Sequel has been uploaded to the WordPress repository and is currently awaiting review. In the meantime you can download a copy below to take for a test drive today….

As always, your feedback are very important to me and your suggestions will help me improve the theme even further – so please take a moment to either leave a comment below or participate in the forums to let me know what you think.

      Hello Claes,

You can use the Fourteen Extended plugin to remove the white space – should work for both Twenty Fourteen and its child themes.

OK let me take a closer look in to it and see why its not working on Sequel.

Will get back to you soon with a solution :)

        Any news about this?

One more thing. Is it possible to have just 3 or 4 posts in grid. The most recent ones, older post shows up as usual below grid as ordinary blogroll? That would be exactly what I`m looking for.

        Cheers!

        Best regards / Claes

        Hello Claes,

        Sorry for the delay.

That issue has me puzzled at the moment and I’m still trying to figure it out. On 3 out of 4 test servers I have it running on the option works perfectly but for the life of me I can not get it to work on the 4th. The baffling thing is all 4 are set up exactly the same with the same data and plugins :-$

One more thing. Is it possible to have just 3 or 4 posts in grid. The most recent ones, older post shows up as usual below grid as ordinary blogroll? That would be exactly what I`m looking for.

I believe that option is already in place via the Fourteen Extended plugin which works on both Twenty Fourteen and child themes.

Let me know if you have the plugin active but the options are not showing or working for Sequel.

        Regards,
        Zulf

Hi and thanks for your fast answer. Well, it looks like it´s a very strange problem.I hope you can find out what´s wrong.

I can´t setup it in sequel. I have slider on top, then grid but I can´t have just 4 posts in grid no matter what I do in settings. I would be very happy if you have time to check it out

        Best regards! Claes

AH, OK – you want the blog feed to display the first 4 posts in the grid format and the rest as a standard layout right?

There’s me under the impression you were referring to the featured grid.

To facilitate that option would require creating a new WP_Query and a template tag to return the those posts in a grid format and use the existing query for the standard loop output. Going to take sometime for me to work on this one as I’m in the middle of my latest theme project.

Let me get to grips with it and see what we can do :)

        Regards,
        Zulf

Working on the required query function at the moment – 70% there so far.

Need to implement and test it thoroughly as it involves manipulating the main query which is already being manipulated by the Featured Content query – need to keep the balance between the two :)

I’ll post out an update as soon as I can.

        Hello Claes,

I think this option is ready for testing and experimenting on to see how it fits with in the requirements.

Here’s what I have on the demo so far: http://sequel.wpdefault.com/ – we can enable/disable the blog feed grid section as well as set the number of posts to show in multiples of 3s.

A zip file is attached for your testing and feedback – do let me know your views and if there are any bugs that need sorting before going live.

        Regards,
        Zulf

Thanks Zulf for working and responding so fast. I tried to get it working but I can´t really run it. It´s possible that I made some mistakes in settings. Anyway, I can´t find slider settings any longer.
I would appreciate if you could have a look at it. I think you have may login credentials? ;-)

        Best regards Claes

I had forgotten to activate Fourteen extended. So Slider shows up as I want. I´ve played around with settings for top grid but I can´t get it working. Maybe I do something wrong. Anyway I can´t have it working like your example site. Could you have a look at it? Slider on top, below four posts in grid, then blogroll.

        Regards, Claes

        Hello Claes,

Sure, I’ll be more than happy to have a look and see if I can get it to work for you – but I no longer have the login details as I had to remove them for security reasons.

Could you please post them again via the Contact Me form? I’ll take a look as soon as I can and get back to you with feedback.

How about include featured images thumbs in page and post lists in WP admin?

      Hello Claes,

I have a functionality plugin for that – did not include it in Fourteen Extended as its more of a Backend function than a theme function.

I’ll probably work it in soon as part of overall better end user experience.

      Regards,
      Zulf

Yes, I know it´s more a Backend function. I think it would be good anyway since almost every theme uses featured images today. It´s handy when I look att my posts/page list and can see what pics are there or is missing.

        Thanks

        Hello,

Thank you! I have deleted the old links and added them again and now is fine! I have discovered that twenty fourteen has big SEO issues! All titles are h1(site title, featured content, posts feed, widget title, footer title, etc…). I know that on a single page has to be only one h1 and the sitemaps are being blocked for no reason and can’t submit them to google. I have a huge struggle to fight all this on the child theme. Have any idea? I don’t want to change the theme because i love this one!

        Thank you again!

    Hi :)

I had Twenty Fourteen set up for RTL languages (Hebrew) using WordPress Language plugin alongside your Styles: Twenty Fourteen and Twenty Fourteen Extended plugins. So the site name was on the right of the screen with the top menu to the left of it, the featured post images ran right to left, the primary menu sidebar was on the right and the content sidebar was on the left of the content.

After I installed Sequel, the primary menu sidebar switched to the left (even though the setting is “default right”) and everything else is in left to right format. The site title is now on the left with the top menu to the right, the content sidebar is to the right of the content and featured post images run left to right. Setting the primary sidebar to float left doesn’t change its position.

My primary reason for using Sequel is to have a grid format home page.

I’ve attached screenshots of the settings and resulting output for each theme.

Can you tell me how get my site in RTL format using Sequel please?
The site (a test site) can be seen at http://eilatevents.com

    Thanks
    Isobel

      Hello Isobel,

Thank you for joining us and for the screenshots/link – they always help a lot in debugging bugs/issues :)

Could you link to the language plugin in use so that I can test with it to see if I can get to the bottom of this bug/issue?

I added a function to call the RTL styles file of the parent theme in the latest update – could you check to see if it has addressed this issue or not?

    Hi Zulf,

Just discovered the Sequel and I must congratulate you on a job well done.

I was wondering if there is anyway to also implement the full grid format on certain categories and on certain tags within my blog in addition to the home page?

    kind regards,

      @propertytips,

My sincere apologies for the delay in responding – been a hectic past week or so on my side.

I’ll take a look at the functions to see if we can force the archives/categories to be output in a grid format too and if possible I’ll get an update out as soon as I can.

My ad units from Adsense do not seem to fit the widget area (Primary Side Bar)….How do I customize the widget area through Jetpack (CSS Stylesheet Editor) to enable them to fit in please? The ads dimensions are: 200×200 and 200×90.

    Thank you.
